Nimmons Bridge, Newtown
Nimmons Bridge, Newtown

Nimmons Bridge at Newtown was built in 1889 for trains to traverse a creek on the Ballarat to Skipton railway line.
It was Victoria's fourth-largest timber trestle bridge when built and is the third-tallest surviving example.
It is also the second-largest composite bridge, combining traditional timber piers with RSJ spans and a timber deck.
The bridge is considered to be the most visually spectacular timber-trestle bridge in Western Victoria and among the most spectacular timber-trestle rail bridges surviving anywhere in Victoria. It is part of the Ballarat-Skipton Rail Trail.
It's an easy 25-minute drive from Ballarat to the site, and there's a short loop walk, which gives impressive views from on top of the bridge and below.
There are also picnic tables and seats, any anyone wanting a longer walk, can enjoy rural views along the rail trail.
The Skipton railway was a 55km branch line running south-west from Ballarat. The line branched from the main Serviceton Western line just after Ballarat at the Linton junction.
It opened on 10 October 1890 and closed on 4 December 1986. The line had previously closed to passenger services in 1972.
